Transformers: Target 2006
Published in Paperback by Titan Books (March, 2003)
Authors: Simon Furman, Geoff Senior, Ron Smith, Jeff Anderson, Will Simpson, and Tim Perkins
Average review score:

Good
This is a collection of the Target: 2006 Storyline of the UK Transformers comics. I enjoyed this graphic novel alot. Although, neither this or 'Fallen Angel' can ever be better than the last issue's of the US comic(by far my favorite). Pick this up if you have already read this US comics (if not get those first).

The Best Transformers Story ever told!
This is the best Transformers comic book story ever told! Target 2006 was written by Simon Furman, with Art By Jeff Anderson, Will Simpson and Ron Smith! But the Best UK Transformers artwork is done by Geoff Senior! Ultra Magnus, Autobot Leader of 2006 travels back in time to 1986 stop Galvatron,Cyclonus, and Scourge from creating a weapon of distructive power that could destroy the Chaos-Bringer Unicron! These characters came from the epic saga of Transformers the Movie! on the back of the book it says "In Target 2006, Arch-Decepticon Leader Galvatron travels back in time to lay the foundations for the future destruction! With Optimus Prime missing, feared dead. Cybertrons greatest Hero, Ultra Magnus maybe Earth's last hope! These Books reprint Transformers UK #78-88! Highly Recommended!

Great Companion to Transformers: The Movie
This collection is from the British Transformers comic and was published just before the TF movie was released. Galvatron, Cyclonus and Scourge have travelled back in time to the 1980's during the events in TF Movie to build a super weapon to destroy Unicron and free themselves from him. The time travel method they use rips 1980's Optimus Prime and several other Transformers out of the present, causing Ultra Magnus to journey from Cybertron to try to discover what has happened to the Matrix. On 1980's Cybertron itself an Autobot terrorist cell is planning a debilitating strike on the Decepticon government. This is, without doubt, one of the best TF stories ever written. The british team were at their peak during this era and you owe it to yourself to purchase this book.

Acadia: Visions and Verse
Published in Hardcover by Down East Books (June, 1999)
Author: Jack Perkins

Waves of Praise
Poetry has gone out of fashion in our obsession with things that take no work and require no thought. Recently my wife and I hosted a dinner in Washington at which Jack spoke. He read from and commented on his poems. For an old broadcast journalist to attempt something like this before an audience of other, mostly cynical journalists was very brave, indeed. But Jack brought it off in a way that had people listening respectfully and then responding enthusiastically. Many promised to immediately purchase their own copies. Whatever relationship you may or may not have with Maine, "Acadia" will do something for your heart that few other contemporary books can do. I highly recommend it as a gift, or for your own consumption and enjoyment. I guarantee you will not be disappointed.

A treasure of vision and verse
I became aware of this book by seeing Jack Perkins interviewed on Maine Public Television about it. It was a wonderful interview and he read some of his poems and explained how the book came to be. It has always been a secret hope of mine that I might bump into Jack some place in Maine, but it has not happened yet. The next best thing is to own his book, and then he can talk to you and share his vision of this unique area of our lovely state. His talent is not limited to his high profile experiences in television journalisim for NBC. He is an accomplished photographer and poet and he has a wonderful heart.

The Afrocentric Self Inventory and Discovery Workbook
Published in Paperback by Third World Press (March, 1991)
Author: Useni Eugene Perkins
Average review score:

It's a sensitive and accurate holy bible of youth gangs.
This author lends his head, heart, dedication and outstanding skills to adolescents on the Westside of Chicago. He has the ability to guide and win the trust of searching youth groping for a model- a man, a Black man figure. Perkins instills morals, the significance of family, justice and a sense of future. His methods of streetwork and philosophy for the community are exemplary and should be replicated in 1999. Get the book, read the book, share the book.

Excellent tool to use with African American children.
This book is an essential tool for anyone working with African American children & Youth. It clearly defines self-esteem and the importance of it as we move to educate, enrich & empower our children. History and culture are shown as an intricate component in creating a foundation of self-love and high self-esteem. This is a wonderful book!

The American Amusement Park Industry: A History of Technology and Thrills (Twayne's Evolution of American Business Series, No 7)
Published in Paperback by Twayne Pub (April, 1991)
Authors: Judith A. Adams and Edwin J. Perkins

Although I completely agree with the previous review, I would like to emphasize how well this book is written. This book is part of Twayne's Evolution of American Business Series and, as such, does not hide raw data from the reader. However, one can easily ignore the tables and skip a few paragraphs in each chapter and still feel very satisfied with the book.

I orginially purchased the book to learn the history of the Walt Disney World Resort. What I gained was a thorough review of the amusement park history from the 12th century Bartholomew Fair to Universal Studios Florida in 1990 (the book was published in 1991). From trolley parks to Coney Island, from Disneyland to Cedar Point, Ms. Adams covers all the bases.

A wonderful book!

Academic study, not lighthearted or fun but excellent
This is a wonderfully researched, thoughtful treatise on the amusement park industry. It is not for those who want a pictorial history, or a romp with colorful characters like George Tilyou. Tilyou is here, but he is surrounded by demographic charts showing the age breakdown of the New York City population during Coney Island's history. There is a great deal of financial information, as well, such as consumer spending on 23 recreational products or services for the years 1909-1923. You get the idea--it is an academic book (but there are some photos, mainly historical).

But as such, it's awesome. There is probably no other book like it. Many academic books are not only dry, they are poorly written, but this one is neither. Here is a sample (since this is the first review and there is little here about the book):

"The major historian of the amusement industry, William F. Mangels, author of "The Outdoor Amusement Industry from Earliest Times to the Present" (1952) was himself a carousel manufacturer. In 1907 Mangels patented a device that imparted an improved, smooth, galloping motion to the horses and in time became common on all carousels. He and his carver, Marcus Charles Illions, produced finely carved carousels, including the Feltman merry-go-round at Coney Island. This man, who in 1912 also created the first wave machine for the swimming pool at Palisades Park, New Jersey, preserved the heritage of the amusement industry in America by organizing and developing the American Museum of Public Recreation."

For the same reason, here is the Table of Contents:

1. The Origins 2. The Form Emerges 3. Coney Island and the Enclosed Park 4. From Trolley to Automobile 5. The Disney Transformation 6. Theme Parks 7. Walt Disney World Resort 8. Overview and Postscript

A: Some Parks That Established the Traditional, Pre-Disneyland Culture B: Industry Associations and Publications Chronology Notes and References Selected Bibliography

As Mark Twain once said, "If you enjoy this sort of thing, this is just the sort of thing you'll enjoy." I found the book's precision and well-supported opinions very entertaining. Perhaps you will, too.

Benigna Machiavelli
Published in Paperback by Such & Such Publishing (March, 1998)
Authors: Charlotte Perkins Gilman, Charlotte Perkins, and Joan Blake
Average review score:

To hell with dusty "women's studies collections."
WHAT!? "Appropriate for academic and women's studies collections" sounds like the kiss of death for a literary work, and that should not happen to Benigna Machiavelli. This utterly delightful work was passed to me by a (male) friend and, well, ok, I confess it sat on my shelf for months while I continued with my usual fare of crime, warfare, and science fiction. Then one day it was raining too hard to go out and I ran out of books. This is something I usually take great care to prevent as I love a good yarn when I have the time, usually a good "feisty" yarn. In desperation I picked Benigna up and started to read . . . and was hooked. Ms. Gilman clearly understands and delights in the human situation. She describes a young girl facing and solving the problems of her day with wit and humor that goes way beyond her gender. So I say, "To hell with dusty "women's studies collections." This is a great read for anyone with even a smidgeon of interest in the workings of the human mind, and it is an especially great read for any man interested in women.

Brilliant, delightful, funny
This work by Charlotte Perkins Gilman is the fictional memoir of a girl grown to womanhood on her own terms. At an early age she decides to become a "good villian" and use her considerable intellect and common sense to make her own life, and the lives of those around her, better. The heroine of the story tackles everything, from obtaining supplies for her school, saving her sister from a would-be seducer, and rescuing the family from their own abusive father, to running her own boarding house, matchmaking for her sister, and helping her mother heal and grow. She succeeds, with wit and style. And Charlotte Perkins Gilman succeeds in creating a highly readable work that both teaches and heals the reader by portraying a better way of life, without preaching.

The Broken Cat
Published in Hardcover by Greenwillow (April, 2002)
Author: Lynne Rae Perkins
Average review score:

A book that resonates with children
Another great kids' book from Lynne Perkins. My five-year-old daughter has taken to "The Broken Cat" to the extent that she has renamed one of our own cats "Frank" after the cat in the book, whose trip to the vet is the trigger for memories by his human owners of past injuries of their own.

Boo-Boo reality!
This book quenched my children's curiosity about what happens if you "get a big boo-boo." My kids LOVE to hear "when Mama & Daddy were little" stories, especially if we were hurt (I think it makes us more human to them). This book does just that. We relive the story of how Mom remembers when she was late for school, fell, and broke her arm. She was scared, sad, embarrassed, "broken," and, we find out in the end, also loved, and eventually all better.

Bubble Trouble with Cassette(s) and Pens/Pencils

Perfect for the Grandchild !!!
The book is excellent for young minds and short attention spans. Our granddaughter loves the story and the accompanying illustrations. But it's only part of this package which is guaranteed to bring joy to the little ones. The book is accompanied in its box by a bubble pen (a pocket bubble machine, complete with wand) and an absolutely enchanting cassette that young folks will easily identify with. An excellent value and a perfect gift for any child.

Great for kids... loved the cassette!
This is great for kid's parties or for kids to play by themselves. Great alternative to today's music for the young. The book makes for a rewarding time spent together between you and your child. Grandma will love it too!

The Business Sale...an Owner's Most Perilous Expedition

A book that really makes sense...
This book as an amazingly helpful guide. Filled with practical, real world experience, it provided signficant insight into the "real" process of selling a business. As a management consulting I occasionally encounter M&A deals. This book is the kind of resource that I need, and can recommend to my clients.

Great resource! Add it to your library!

Excellent Resource!
After reading this book, I now have a clear understanding as to the steps involved in selling a company - it is far more complex than I imagined.

The Cheapskate's Guide to Entertaining: How to Throw Fabulous Parties on a Modest Budget

The title speaks truth...
This is an excellent book full of interesting ideas. You not only learn circumstances of being "cheap" but also how to adapt your own ideas to cut expenses.

This seems to be good for those who entertain, and those who want to do catering and need some ideas.

Packed with great ideas!
A book for people who want to entertain with efficiency, shortcuts, and bargains. Many good suggestions, especially for unique gatherings and kids' parties and games. I loved her instructions for making piƱatas. Includes resources for where to buy items and easy recipes.

The Dog (Seuil Edition)
Published in Hardcover by Chronicle Books (November, 2000)
Author: Lucian Perkins

Insightful Photography
I was fascinated by Perkins' book examining the fashon industry---something that was quite foreign to me. His insightful photographic analysis of the industry and the people opened a new understanding of this activity so foreign to those of us in west Texas. His photographs conveyed the the energy, the joy and despair, anxiety and confidence that accompanies modeling. A great "inside look" by an immanently accomplished photographer.

AWSOME!
The books cover caught my attention, I picked it up, looked at it and knew I had to buy it. As a photographer I found this book to be a new way of looking at the world of fashion. "Runway Madness," takes you on a journey of what happens backstage during a fashion show. This book is perfect for anyone who likes fashion and photography.
